Abstract:
The Antarctic atmosphere provides a unique natural laboratory for studying the complex physical, chemical and dynamical processes in the Earth’s atmosphere and space environment. However, this region remains one of the least understood regions of the atmosphere. In particular, very little is known about the neutral atmosphere in the altitude range of 100–200 km because observations were very rare. LIDAR (light detection and ranging) is addressing this issue with the unmatched capabilities of observing metal atoms, neutral temperatures, neutral winds and gravity waves well into the thermosphere. In particular, the lidar observational campaign we are conductingat McMurdo Station in Antarctica has revealed several intriguing science discoveries recently.McMurdo (77.83°S, 166.66°E) is to the east of the Trans-Antarctic Mountainsand by the poleward edge of the aurora oval.In this seminar wewill introduce lidar as an innovative research field that integrates spectroscopy fundamentals, laser technologies, photonics, optoelectronics, and modern data acquisition to explore the atmosphere and space. Weshare the experience gained from our journey in the last 15 years of making science discoveries from the North Pole to the South Pole (pole-to-pole) with lidar. One focus is a very recent lidar discovery from McMurdo– the neutral iron (Fe) layers with gravity wave signatures extended well into the thermosphere (~160 km). Not only is this the first time for a single instrument to trace gravity waves from 30 to 155 km, but also it enables the first direct measurements of neutral temperatures deep into the E-region. Such discovery has opened the door to observing the neutral polar atmosphere with ground-based instruments.McMurdo lidar campaign has answered a few questions but many new results are challenging our understandings. We welcome collaborations from the community.
Biography:
