Abstract

Soft matter systems exhibit a remarkable ability to self-organize into complex structures whose properties emerge from the interplay between interactions, thermal fluctuations, and external constraints. Colloidal suspensions, in particular, provide an ideal platform for investigating fundamental questions concerning self-assembly, dynamical arrest, and non-equilibrium behavior.

In this talk, I will present an overview of our recent work on the statistical physics of colloidal systems, focusing on gels and glasses as paradigmatic non-equilibrium states of matter. Using a combination of simulations, statistical-mechanical theory, and experimental realizations, we explore the microscopic mechanisms that control gelation, glass formation, aging, and structural relaxation. These investigations reveal how collective behavior emerges in complex colloidal systems and contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical principles governing non-equilibrium soft matter.

Brief CV of Ramón Castañeda-Priego

Ramón Castañeda-Priego is a professor of Statistical Physics at the University of Guanajuato. He received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2003 from the Center of Research and Advanced Studies, Mexico, and worked as a post-doctoral fellow in physics at the University of Konstanz, Germany, before moving back to Mexico in 2004. He leads the Soft Matter Theory Lab at the Physical Engineering Department. He has been working over the last twenty-five years on the thermodynamics, structural properties, transport phenomena, phase transitions, particle aggregation, effective interactions, physical gelation, dynamical arrest and (spontaneous and directed) self-assembly of many-body systems (colloids, polyelectrolytes, proteins, among others). He is editor of Current Opinion of Colloid and Interface Science (Elsevier), a member of the Editorial Board of Physical Review E (APS) and Chief Editor of the Revista Mexicana de Física. He currently serves as Director of the Physical Engineering Department of the University of Guanajuato and the Deputy General Director Mesoamerican Center for Theoretical Physics (Mexico).
