Abstract:
Muon Spin Relaxation (µSR) is a materials scientific characterization spectroscopy, which employs an elementary particle called muon as a very sensitive magnetic probe. Its basic is a full employment of the “parity violation in the weak decay of particles” as predicted by T.D. Lee and C.N. Yang in the 1950s, and experimentally verified by the experimentalists at Columbia University, USA. The application of µSR to the materials science had to wait for the construction of high intensity (a few hundred µA) proton accelerators with over 500 MeV in energy. The practical start-up of the µSR facilities were in the 1980s, when the cuprate high-Tc superconductors were discovered and became the rich source of subjects to be explored by µSR.
The spectroscopic feature of µSR is complementary to neutron scattering techniques, which are also often available in the same proton accelerator facilities. The talk will cover µSR from its basics, how it is complementary to neutron scattering, and what kind of subjects in materials science have been pursued by µSR with recent examples in superconductors, quantum magnets and molecular radicals.
Brief CV of Prof.Kenji M. Kojima:
Kenji M. Kojima is a Senior Research Scientist at TRIUMF, the Accelerator-based Research Institute in Vancouver, Canada. He is appointed with Centre for Molecular and Materials Science at TRIUMF, and also with Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute, at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
He received his PhD in physics from the University of Tokyo in 1996, following the bachelor’s and master’s degrees there in 1991 and 1993. He stayed at Columbia University in 1996-1998 as a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) postdoctoral fellow, became a junior faculty member at the University of Tokyo (1998-2009), and then proceeded to an Associate Professor position at KEK, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization of Japan, which jointly operates the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Tokai. He moved to TRIUMF and UBC in 2018 and became the Senior level in December 2019.
His recent work addresses time-reversal-symmetry-breaking superconductivity, frustrated and topological quantum magnets, molecular radicals, and local hydrogen states.
